Nigeria just punched above its weight — literally. The International Boxing Association has released its 2026 world rankings and Nigeria sits at number 24 out of 153 countries. Ahead of France. Ahead of the United States of America.
Let that sink in. 🥊🇳🇬
The Numbers That Tell the Story
Nigeria accumulated 12,150 points in the IBA 2026 rankings. France and the USA both sit at 25th place with 11,500 points each. Nigeria beat them both.
Out of 153 boxing nations worldwide, Nigeria placed in the top 16 percent. That is not luck. That is consistent performance across major international competitions.
Who Leads the Global Rankings?
At the top of the world sits Uzbekistan with a massive 48,700 points. The Central Asian nation has become arguably the most dominant boxing country in the world over the last decade.
Russia follows in second place with 40,850 points. Kazakhstan holds third with 38,300 points.
The Democratic Republic of Congo ranks fourth globally with 36,825 points — making it Africa’s highest ranked boxing nation. Australia rounds out the top five with 33,725 points.
Morocco sits sixth globally with 29,600 points. Nigeria at 24th and Morocco at 6th make Africa a serious boxing continent — not just a participant.
How the IBA Rankings Work
The IBA uses a two-year rolling points model. Points come from performances at officially sanctioned competitions — Olympic Games, World Championships, Continental Championships and World Boxing Tour events.
Higher level competitions carry more points. A gold medal at the World Championships is worth far more than a regional title. As newer results come in, older performances gradually lose value.
This means Nigeria’s ranking reflects genuine recent performance — not historical reputation.
Why This Matters for Nigerian Boxing
Nigeria has always produced exceptional individual boxers. But ranking 24th as a nation is different. It means Nigeria’s boxing system — federations, coaches, development programmes and athletes — is functioning at a globally competitive level.
This ranking positions Nigerian boxers better for international seedings. It improves Nigeria’s standing in continental boxing politics. It attracts attention from international promoters and sponsors.
Most importantly it inspires the next generation of Nigerian fighters watching from their homes in Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and beyond.
Nigeria’s Sporting Rise Is Bigger Than Boxing
Nigeria’s 24th place in world boxing rankings comes at a time of growing Nigerian pride on the global sports stage.

From boxing rings to football pitches — Nigeria is showing the world what it is capable of. 🇳🇬
What Comes Next for Nigerian Boxing
The two-year rolling model means Nigeria must keep competing and winning to maintain or improve this position. Upcoming Continental Championships and World Boxing Tour events are critical.
Every Nigerian boxer who steps into the ring at an IBA-sanctioned event contributes to the national ranking. The work continues.
