I Left Nigeria for Europe — Nigerians Living Abroad Share Their Honest Experiences”

Every week, hundreds of Nigerians pack their bags and head to Europe in search of better opportunities, safety, and a different quality of life. But what is life really like on the other side?

GossipShop gathered real experiences from Nigerians currently living across Europe — from Spain to the UK, Germany to Portugal — and what they shared will surprise you, encourage you, and maybe even save you from costly mistakes.

The first six months nearly broke me

Tunde, 34, who relocated to Southern Europe two years ago, says the honeymoon phase ended quickly.

“Everyone back home thinks you are living large. The truth is, in the first six months, you are just surviving. Learning the system, the language, and the culture. It is not beans.”

He adds that the community saved him.

“Find your people early. Other Nigerians who have been there longer will help you avoid plenty of wahala.”

The money is real, but so is the loneliness

Chioma, 29, a nurse now based in Western Europe, says the financial improvement was immediate — but came with a price.

“I earn more in one month here than I earned in six months in Lagos. But I have cried more in this country than my entire life in Nigeria. The loneliness is real, especially in winter.”

She advises anyone relocating to prepare mentally, not just financially.

Nobody tells you about the paperwork

Emmanuel, 41, a businessman who moved to Europe with his family, says bureaucracy was his biggest shock.

“In Nigeria, you can sort things with a phone call or by knowing someone. Here, everything is a process: documents, appointments, and waiting. You must be patient, or it will frustrate you.”

What They All Agree On

Despite the challenges, not one person GossipShop spoke to said they regretted leaving. Common advice from all of them:

  • Save aggressively before you travel — have at least 6 months’ expenses ready
  • Learn basic words of the local language — it opens doors and earns respect
  • Don’t compare your journey to others — everyone’s process is different
  • Stay connected to your roots — Nigerian community groups abroad are lifelines
  • Plan before you leap — research the specific country, not just “Europe” generally
