Germany is open for business โ and Nigeria’s skilled workers are welcome. The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) lets you move to Germany first and find your job after you arrive. No job offer needed. No employer required. Just your qualifications, your language skills and your financial proof.
GossipShop gives you the complete updated guide for 2026.
What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?
The Germany Opportunity Card โ known in German as the Chancenkarte โ is a residence permit that allows non-EU nationals to live in Germany for up to 12 months while searching for a job. While you search, you can also work part-time for up to 20 hours per week and take short two-week trial jobs.
This is genuinely different from a normal work visa. You do not need a German employer to sponsor you. You apply, move to Germany, and find your job while you are already living there.
Do You Qualify? Two Routes Into Germany
There are two ways to qualify for the Opportunity Card:
Route 1 โ Direct Route (Easiest)
If your university degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you qualify directly as a skilled worker. You skip the points system entirely. You still need to meet the language and financial requirements.
Route 2 โ Points System
If your qualification is not yet fully recognised in Germany, you qualify through a points system. You need a minimum of 6 points. Points are awarded across several categories โ see the full breakdown below.

Basic Requirements for All Applicants
Regardless of which route you use, every applicant must meet these basic requirements:
Language: Minimum A1 German OR B2 English. IELTS and TOEFL are both accepted as proof of English proficiency. Tests must not be older than one year.
Education: A university degree or at least two years of vocational training โ recognised in the country where you obtained it.
Finance: You must prove you can support yourself financially. The minimum required is โฌ1,091 per month โ approximately โฌ13,092 for the full year.
Three Ways to Prove Your Finances
This is important. You do not necessarily need โฌ13,092 sitting in a blocked account. Germany accepts three options:
Option 1 โ Blocked Bank Account Open a blocked account with a minimum of โฌ13,092. You can open one through providers like Expatrio or Fintiba from Nigeria before travelling.
Option 2 โ Declaration of Commitment A person living in Germany โ a relative, friend or acquaintance โ officially agrees to cover your living expenses. This is called a Verpflichtungserklรคrung.
Option 3 โ Part-Time Job Contract If you already have a part-time job contract in Germany paying at least โฌ1,091 per month net, that counts as financial proof.
Documents You Need to Apply
Gather all of these before starting your application:

- Completed and signed visa application form

Frequently Asked Questions Nigerian Applicants Ask
Can I take my family with me? The Opportunity Card does not automatically grant family reunion rights. However if your spouse independently qualifies for their own Opportunity Card, you can travel together. Children can accompany you if you can prove you can cover their living costs too.
Is there an age limit? No age limit. However the points system rewards younger applicants โ 2 points for under 35, 1 point for ages 35 to 40.
Can I work full-time? No. Part-time work is capped at 20 hours per week while you are on the Opportunity Card. Once you find a qualified full-time job and switch to a work visa, you can work full time.
Does it lead to permanent residency? Not directly. But once you find a job and switch to a work visa, that work visa can eventually lead to permanent residency โ which can then lead to German citizenship.
Can I extend my stay beyond 12 months? Only in specific circumstances โ for example, if you have found a job but do not yet qualify for a work permit, you may extend your Opportunity Card for up to two additional years.
Do tourist visits to Germany earn points? No. Only stays for study, language courses or work count as a prior stay for points purposes.
What if I am already in Germany studying? You generally cannot apply while still studying. After you graduate, you can extend your student residence permit for up to 18 months to search for a job. With a German degree you qualify directly as a skilled worker โ no points system needed.
In-Demand Jobs in Germany for Nigerians
Germany is actively seeking workers in these shortage sectors where Nigerians have particular strength:
- Healthcare โ nurses, doctors, pharmacists, lab technicians
- Information technology โ software developers, data analysts, cybersecurity
- Engineering โ civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical
- Education โ teachers, early childhood educators
- Construction and trades โ electricians, plumbers, welders
Working in a shortage occupation earns you an additional point in the system and puts you at the front of employer queues.
