World Bank Selects Abia State for $700 Million Water Project — What It Means for Residents

Abia State just landed one of the biggest development deals in its history. The World Bank has selected the state as one of just six Nigerian states to benefit from a massive $700 million water and sanitation programme. Here is everything you need to know.

What Is the SURWASH Programme?

The World Bank funds a major initiative called the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene programme — known as SURWASH. It targets Nigerian states that show strong governance, reform progress and readiness to deliver results.

Abia State earned its place on that list. Governor Alex Otti chaired the State Executive Council meeting where the announcement was officially made.

What Abia Gets From This Deal

This is not just about clean water — though that alone is transformational.

The SURWASH programme will improve access to safe drinking water across Abia’s urban and rural communities. It will upgrade sanitation facilities. It will improve hygiene infrastructure in areas where water challenges remain severe.

For Abia residents who have struggled with unreliable water supply for years — this is real, tangible change coming their way.

Why Did Abia Get Selected?

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, gave a clear answer — international confidence in Governor Otti’s administration.

The World Bank does not give $700 million to states with poor governance records. Abia’s selection reflects ongoing reforms in governance, infrastructure and public service delivery under the current administration.

Global development partners are watching Nigeria’s states closely. Abia passed the test.

The USAID WASH Project Also Returns

Beyond the World Bank deal, Abia announced another win. The previously suspended USAID small-town WASH project has resumed. It now operates under a new funding structure through Mercy Corps.

Work is resuming on water schemes in Ubakala and Ariaria. Communities that had been waiting now have a timeline again.

Power Sector Progress Too

The Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency granted interim licences to three companies — New Era, Aba Power and Geometric Power. These licences open the door to improved electricity distribution across the state.

The state’s half-year power restoration project has reached approximately 85 percent completion. Communities including Ohafia are expected to receive full electricity restoration before the end of the second quarter of 2026.

Solar Energy Is Coming to Aba and Umuahia

Abia also announced the launch of a 1.8-megawatt microgrid solar project. The solar initiative targets central bus terminals in Umuahia and Aba.

This supports the state’s clean energy agenda. It also reduces dependence on the national grid — which every Nigerian knows cannot be trusted.

New Appointments Announced

Governor Otti approved the appointment of Professor Deka Chioma Okoropo as the new Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital. Dr. Nkiru Kachidia Maduwe joins as Project Coordinator for NEWMAP under the Ministry of Environment.

Governor Otti’s Third Anniversary — No Fanfare

Governor Otti marks three years in office soon. His administration chose a different kind of celebration.

Instead of elaborate parties, the anniversary will feature project commissioning ceremonies and the flag-off of new initiatives across Abia’s three senatorial zones. The focus stays on delivery — not celebration.

That is the kind of leadership that attracts $700 million from the World Bank.

GossipShop Verdict

Abia State is on a serious development trajectory under Governor Alex Otti. The World Bank does not hand out $700 million to states run by chance. This selection reflects real governance reforms and international credibility.

For Abia residents — cleaner water, better sanitation, improved power supply and solar energy are all moving from promise to reality. Watch this space. 🇳🇬
