The Lagos State Government has declared the executive order restricting the use of motorcycles also known as (okada) and tricycles (keke) in some parts of the state are in accordance with the law.
The Director of public affairs in Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Kayode Oyekanmi, in a statement credited to him on Tuesday, said the state government had filed a notice of preliminary objection and counter-affidavit against the suit challenging the ban of motorcycle and tricycles in some parts of the state.
The state government had on February 1, 2020, restricted motorcycle and tricycle riders from plying some routes in six Local Government Areas and nine Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State.
A lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, also filed a fundamental human rights’ application before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, challenging the executive order of Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu.
The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), who appeared for the state government before the court on Tuesday said the government had also filed a written address in opposition to the originating summons of the applicant.
He prayed the court to dismiss the originating summons, saying the restriction of okada and keke on major roads in the state were in line with the provisions of the Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
The presiding Judge, Justice Mohammad Liman, adjourned till Wednesday (today) for judgment.
